WOTOTIC and Ackpair Heated Socks Linked to Fire & Burn Hazards

In October 2024, safety officials warned consumers to immediately stop using WOTOTIC and Ackpair Heated Socks due to the risk of serious burn injuries and fire hazards. They were sold on Amazon.com by a seller based in China that has been “unresponsive” to requests for a recall.

How Many People Were Burned?

There were 7 reports of incidents, including 4 fires and 3 reports of the socks “sparking or malfunctioning, all of which resulted in burn injuries, including 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns,” according to the recall.

How To Identify Recalled Heated Socks

This recall involves WOTOTIC and Ackpair Heated Socks with model number HS101.

The defective heated socks are 100% cotton and gray. They are powered by a lithium-polymer battery with a temperature switch at the top.

The socks were sold on Amazon.com, Backcountryoutdoor.com and Snapklik.com from September 2023 through October 2024.

Battery-Powered Heated Socks Manufactured in China

Amazon.com and other websites are selling dozens of brands of electric battery-powered heated socks. Nearly all of these heated socks are made overseas by companies based in China, which is also where the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are manufactured.

These companies often simply disappear from Amazon when their products are linked to fire hazards or serious burn injuries, leaving customers with no refund or remedy for their defective products.

Heated Sock Recalls

WOTOTIC and Ackpair Heated Socks were manufactured by a China-based company called “ZHOngshanshihuiyuemaoyiyouxiangongsi,” which was “unresponsive to CPSC requests for information about this product or to a recall.” This means that consumers may not be able to get a refund.

What Are WOTOTIC Heated Socks?

WOTOTIC Heated Socks were sold on amazon.com and advertised as “electric heated socks for outdoors, hunting, golf, camping, and gifts.” They were also advertised as “suitable for all kinds of outdoor sports, winter work and patients with Raynaud’s arthritis.”

Heated Sock Temperature Can Hit 131ºF

WOTOTIC electric heated socks were powered by a 7.4V 6000mAH lithium polymer rechargeable battery. The manufacturer claimed that “the battery capacity is larger than others products and the voltage is more stable,” so the socks can quickly heat up in 30 seconds, reach temperatures up to 131ºF, with a heating time up to 12 hours.

What Should I Do?

Consumers should immediately remove the battery packs from these defective heated socks and dispose of them following local hazardous waste disposal procedures. Do not throw this recalled battery in the trash. This battery is potentially hazardous due to the risk of fires, so it must be handled differently than other batteries.
