Vimovo is an anti-arthritis drug that also contains an antacid. Unfortunately, the antacid has been linked to kidney inflammation (nephritis), kidney disease, stomach cancer, and other side effects.

Vimovo and Stomach Cancer
In November 2017, a study published in the journal Gut found a doubled (2X) higher risk of stomach cancer for people who were on long-term treatment with heartburn medications in the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class, which includes popular antacids like Vimovo.
Heartburn Drugs May Increase Risk of Death
July 2017 — Researchers have linked the use of PPI heartburn drugs with up to a 50% increased risk of death compared to H2-blocker heartburn drugs, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open. The researchers estimated 1 excess death per 500 people who take a PPI. Click here to read more.

What is Vimovo?
Vimovo is a combination medication that is marketed for the treatment of arthritis. It contains naproxen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) that can cause stomach ulcers with long-term treatment. Vimovo also contains an antacid called esomeprazole (Nexium) to help prevent ulcers by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach.
Vimovo and Kidney Failure
Vimovo contains an antacid in the Proton-Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class. All drugs in this class are associated with acute interstitial nephritis, a type of sudden kidney inflammation and swelling that is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction. The FDA updated the label on Vimovo to include nephritis in December 2014.
Experts are not sure why PPIs are associated with kidney problems, but it may have something to do with low magnesium levels or repeated bouts of inflammation due to nephritis.
Over the last 20 years, PPIs have been linked to dozens of case reports of nephritis. Two large studies recently found evidence of kidney side effects that can lead to kidney failure:
- Canadian researchers published a study linking PPIs with a tripled increased risk of nephritis and a 2.4-fold increased risk of kidney injury.
- A study published by JAMA Internal Medicine in February 2016 found that daily users of PPIs were 20-50% more likely to develop Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
What is the problem?
The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, our trial lawyers are not currently filing a class action lawsuit for people who were injured by Vimovo. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of people with kidney problems, such as:
- Interstitial nephritis
- Kidney inflammation
- Acute kidney injury
- Chronic kidney disease
- Renal failure
- Stomach cancer
About Class Actions
Class actions are designed to help a lot of people resolve similar legal claims as efficiently as possible. Members join together and collectively seek compensation. It is very uncommon for class actions to go to trial. In most class actions, everyone divides the payout equally.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
The problem with class actions is that they are not designed to maximize the payout for individual plaintiffs with the most severe injuries. Members of class actions may have to accept “low-ball” settlements or higher attorneys’ fees.
Our lawyers file individual lawsuits against drug-makers who fail to warn about side effects. We focus our efforts on helping victims of defective drugs seek compensation for their medical bills, pain and suffering, lost income, permanent injuries, and more.
