What is Ultrasound Gel?
Ultrasound imaging requires the use of a device known as a transducer, which projects sound-waves into the body to create an image. Ultrasound gel helps improve the quality of the image.
What is B. Cepacia?
The ultrasound gel may be contaminated with the bacteria Burkholderia stabilis, which is a member of the B. cepacia complex.
The symptoms of a B. cepacia infection vary widely, ranging from no symptoms to serious infections. The recalled ultrasound gel has been linked to reports of bloodstream infections, which may result in sepsis, and in certain cases, death.
