Texas Woman With 3rd-Degree Burns Files Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

Texas Woman With 3rd-Degree Burns Files Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

October 9, 2024 — A lawsuit has been filed by a woman in Texas who suffered 3rd-degree burns when her Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker exploded as she opened the lid.

The lawsuit was filed by Ashley J., a woman from Princeton, Texas, who was burned by a Ninja Foodi® Pressure Cooker (Model #OP300-I07) while using it to make gumbo soup on January 16, 2023.

According to her lawsuit, she had received the pressure cooker as a gift in 2021 and used it on multiple occasions, without any problems.

On this occasion, she was using the non-pressurized settings on the product (specifically the “sear” function) with the lid on. When she needed to add more ingredients to the pot, she tried to open the lid.

She did not encounter any resistance while opening the lid, but unfortunately, the unit was still pressurized. Opening the lid caused “extremely hot” liquid to explode out and hit her torso and left forearm.

According to her lawsuit:

“As she removed the lid from the pot, she was immediately struck by boiling-hot cooking liquid that spewed out from the pressurized Ninja Foodi. … She went to the hospital for treatment of 2nd and 3rd-degree burns to her torso and left forearm.”

Her lawsuit accuses the manufacturer, SharkNinja, of selling an “unreasonably dangerous” pressure cooker that is is “defectively designed” because the lid can open when it is pressurized.

Her damages include physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, disfigurement, physical impairment, loss of earnings in the past and loss of earning capacity in the future, medical expenses, and more.

The pressure cooker lawsuit was filed against SharkNinja Operating LLC on September 19, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas (Sherman Division) — Case Number 4:24-cv-00836-SDJ.
