Tepezza Lawsuit Filed by Man With Hearing Loss

The first-known Tepezza lawsuit was filed in August 2022 by Daniel W., a man from Arizona who claims that Tepezza caused him to develop permanent hearing loss and damage.

What Happened?

The lawsuit was filed by a man who received multiple intravenous (I.V.) infusions of Tepezza between June and September 2020 for the treatment of thyroid eye disease (or Grave’s disease).

During that time, he was given no warnings about the serious risk of permanent hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears) from Tepezza.

The only warning on the label related to hearing loss is an adverse event included in “Clinical Trial Experience,” which indicates that 10% of Tepezza users developed hearing problems, vs. 0% on a placebo.

List of Hearing Injuries Reported in Tepezza Clinical Trials

Hearing impairments noted in the Tepezza clinical trials included:

• Deafness
• Eustachian tube dysfunction
• Hyperacusis
• Hypoacusis
• Autophony

What Does the Lawsuit Claim?

The lawsuit claims that Horizon Pharmaceuticals told the FDA that the hearing loss experienced in clinical trials “was temporary and generally of limited duration.” Even so, a growing number of patients and studies have confirmed that long-term hearing loss is a risk.

According to the lawsuit:

“Numerous patient reports, scientific studies, and even Defendant’s post-marketing studies have established that Tepezza causes hearing loss. Nevertheless, Defendant failed to warn…about the risk of hearing loss, or the need for medical, audiological monitoring. At all relevant times, the U.S. label for Tepezza contained no warning of permanent hearing loss.”
