Target Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Filed in Minnesota

In July 2024, a pressure cooker lawsuit was filed against Target Corporation in federal court in Minnesota, where the retailer is headquartered.

The lawsuit was filed by Shayanna B., a woman from Portland, Oregon, who claims that she was burned by a defective Instant Pot Duo Crisp Pressure Cooker that she bought from Target.

What is the Problem?

The lawsuit accuses Target and another company, Midea America Corp., of selling defective pressure cookers that are unsafe because the lid can be opened when the pressure cooker is still pressurized.

What Happened?

According to the lawsuit, she suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries” in August 2022 when she was able to twist open the lid on her Instant Pot, which ejected the scalding-hot contents of the pot.

What Does The Lawsuit Claim?

She claims that she purchased the Instant Pot Duo Crisp from her local Target because it was “advertised as convenient and safe and touted for their supposed ‘safety’ features.” Instead, she claims that she was misled because it actually “suffers from serious and dangerous defects.”

Lawsuit Claims Instant Pot Has Defective Safety Features

Specifically, she claims that “the lid of the pressure cooker is removable with built-up pressure, heat, and steam still inside the unit.”

Opening the lid on an Instant Pot while it is still pressurized can result in the scalding-hot contents being forcefully ejected out of the pot and onto innocent bystanders, resulting in severe burn injuries and scalds.

Her Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed against Target Corporation and Midea America Corp. on July 11, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota — Case Number 0:24-cv-02682-PJS-DTS.
