June 21, 2024 — A class action lawsuit has been filed against Johnson & Johnson by lawyers for women who are seeking medical monitoring for cancers linked to talcum powder.
The lawsuit is seeking damages and medical monitoring for women were diagnosed with cancer, or may develop it in the future, after using Johnson’s Baby Powder and other talcum powder products.
Johnson & Johnson insists that talc is safe and does not cause cancer, but plaintiffs in the lawsuit allege that talcum powder may be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen.
The company is facing more than 61,000 lawsuits from women who developed ovarian cancer, other gynecological cancers, or mesothelioma after using Johnson’s Baby Powder and other products.
The class action was filed after Johnson & Johnson reached a $700 million talcum powder settlement with 42 states and Washington D.C., resolving charges that the company misled consumers into believing that talcum powder products were safe.
Last month, the company also proposed a $6.48 billion settlement to resolve most of the litigation over the next 25 years. It has set aside about $11 billion to cover all talcum powder liabilities.
