What is the problem?
October 12, 2014 — SunBurst Foods, a food-service company based in North Carolina, has issued a recall for over 100 different types of pre-made deli sandwiches, breakfast foods, hamburgers, hotdogs, salads, fruits, vegetables, and desserts.
The recall was issued after one sample of food tested positive for Listeria, according to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services.
No reports of illness have been linked to any products. However, SunBurst Foods is taking the precautionary action of recalling all products distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia.
The products were sold under many brand-names, including SunBurst, Fresh Bites, and the following private label brands:
- River Edge Farms
- CFW
- Southern Zest
- CJ’s Vending
- Binford Street Deli
- Middle Georgia Vendors
- Roanoke Foods
- Select Foods
- Jesse Jones (Double Chili Dogs)

What is Listeriosis?
Unlike most bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes can grow under refrigeration temperatures. People who eat contaminated food could potentially develop a serious case of food poisoning.
The infection could invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening complications in young children, older or frail adults, and people with weak immune systems. Pregnant women are also at risk of suffering a miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or other complications.
For healthy adults, short-term symptoms may include:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Stiffness
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
