Unilever Recalls Suave 24-Hour Protection for Benzene
In March 2022, Unilever recalled certain batches of Suave 24-Hour Protection Aerosol Antiperspirant due to benzene contamination.
What Products Were Recalled?
- Suave 24-Hour Protection Aerosol Antiperspirant Powder (4-oz. and 6-oz.) — UPC 079400751508 and 079400784902
- Suave 24-Hour Protection Aerosol Antiperspirant Fresh (6-oz.) — UPC 079400785503
What is the Problem?
Unilever said it found “slightly elevated levels” of benzene, a carcinogen. Even so, Unilever claimed that “daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.”
Benzene was not an active ingredient that was added to Suave 24-Hour Protection, but it was found as an impurity in the propellant chemical that sprays the antiperspirant product out of the can.
Unilever Fights Class Action Lawsuit for Benzene in Secret 24-Hour Protection
Just weeks before Unilever recalled Secret 24-Hour Protection Aerosol products, the company tried to dismiss a class action lawsuit involving consumers who claimed there was benzene in the product. The lawsuit was filed in response to testing by Valisure, an independent lab that has found benzene in dozens of products.
What is Benzene?
Benzene is a toxic chemical that is classified as a human carcinogen. People can be exposed to benzene by breathing, swallowing, or absorbing it through the skin. Exposure to benzene is harmful to human health, according to the recall:
“It can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening.”
More Consumer Products Recalled for Benzene Contamination
In recent years, a growing number of consumer products in aerosol spray-cans have been recalled due to benzene. These products include other deodorant / antiperspirant sprays, such as Brut, Sure, Secret, Old Spice, and others.
Other aerosol spray products have also been recalled, including spray sunscreen, anti-fungal foot sprays, dry shampoo, and more.
