March 4, 2022 — Eight states have launched a nationwide investigation into whether TikTok “causes or exacerbates physical and mental health harms” for teenagers, children and young adults.
The investigation into TikTok is being led by a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Vermont.
Massachusetts AG Maura Healey said:
“As children and teens already grapple with issues of anxiety, social pressure, and depression, we cannot allow social media to further harm their physical health and mental wellbeing.”
The state officials are seeking to protect young people by gathering more information about how companies like TikTok are influencing their daily lives.
The crackdown on social media platforms comes after 2 years of the coronavirus pandemic forced most teenagers to interact with each other online when schools were closed and sports suspended.
