UPDATE: 40 Types of Spinach Recalled for Listeria Risk
In June 2024, the New York-based company Solata Foods LLC announced a recall for around 40 types of bagged spinach that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The spinach comes in various brand-names, sizes, bags, and clamshell containers. All packages have lot numbers #40606 and 11006 on the package and with an expiration date of 6/20/24 and 6/24/24 stamped on the side.
The recalled brands of fresh spinach include:
- Solata
- Gaia
- Full Circle
- Farmer Direct
- Uncle Vinny’s
- Bogopa
- Greens Bulk Spring Mix
Lidl Frozen Spinach Recall
In January 2022, Frozen Food Development recalled certain 12-ounce bags of Lidl® Frozen Chopped Spinach due to a risk of Listeria. The recalled spinach was distributed at Lidl retail stores in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Click here to read more.
2019 Frozen Spinach Recall
In June 2019, Sprouts Farmers Market recalled bags of frozen cut-leaf spinach after bags tested positive for Listeria. The following products were recalled:
- Sprouts Frozen Cut Leaf Spinach — 16oz. bag, UPC 87487500982, Lot 19031203A03, USE BY 12/03/21
- Sprouts Frozen Organic Cut Leaf Spinach — 16oz. bag, UPC 87487500991, Lot 19031203A03, USE BY 12/03/21
It was sold at Sprouts Farmers Market locations in Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.
2015 Organic Spinach Recalls
In March 2015, about 30 different foods containing organic spinach have been recalled by Target, Costco, Wegmans, Meijer, Smart & Final, and Amy’s Kitchen due to possible contamination with Listeria, a bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
The recall was issued by the California-based spinach supplier Coastal Green Vegetable Company, LLC.
Samples taken from bulk spinach that was shipped to major retailers has tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning.
No illnesses have been linked to the recalled spinach, but at least 30 different products are affected. Most of the products are frozen, which means it is likely that consumers still have these products in their home.
Meijer and Wegmans Grocery Stores — A recall was issued by Twin City Foods, Inc., for packages of frozen spinach that were supplied to Meijer and Wegmans grocery stores. Products include:
- Cadia Organic Cut Spinach, 16 oz. frozen packages
- Meijer Organics Chopped Spinach, 16 oz. frozen packages
- Wild Harvest Organic Cut Leaf Spinach, 16 oz. frozen packages
- Wegmans Organic Just Picked Spinach, 12 oz. frozen packages
Amy’s Kitchen — Amy’s Kitchen, a major producer of vegetarian and vegan organic frozen food products, has issued a recall for about a dozen different products that contain organic spinach, including:
- Vegetable Lasagna
- Tofu Vegetable Lasagna
- Garden Vegetable Lasagna
- Tofu Scramble
- Enchilada Verde Whole Meal
- Spinach Pizza
- Brown Rice & Vegetable
- Stuffed Pasta Shells Bowl
- Gluten Free Tofu Scramble Breakfast Wrap
- Gluten Free Dairy Free Veg Lasagna
Costco, Smart & Final — La Terra Fina has issued a recall for organic spinach dip that was sold at Costco and Smart & Final grocery stores. The recalled products include:
- Spinach Artichoke & Parmesan Dip made with Greek Yogurt, 31oz. tub
- Chunky Spinach Artichoke & Parmesan Dip, 31oz. tub
Target — Superior Foods, Inc., has issued a recall for about 8,475 cases of organic frozen spinach that was sold nationwide exclusively at Target retail stores. The recalled product is “Simply Balanced Organic Chopped Spinach” sold in a 10-oz steamer bag.
Listeria Food Poisoning
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that is commonly found in soil and water. When people ingest contaminated food or water, they can become very ill with listeriosis. This condition is especially dangerous for pregnant women, young children, older adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems.
Listeria food poisoning symptoms may include:
