UPDATE: Frozen Shrimp Recall Expands After More Salmonella Illnesses
In August 2021, Avanti Frozen Foods expanded a recall to include more frozen shrimp that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
At least 9 people were infected with Salmonella Weltevreden in 4 states: Arizona (2), Michigan (2), Nevada (4), and Rhode Island (1).
Health officials closed the outbreak investigation in July 2021, but re-opened the investigation in August 2021 after more people got sick.
The expanded recall includes frozen shrimp sold nationwide between November 2020 and May 2021 under the following brand-names:

- Ahold
- Big River
- Censea
- Chicken of the Sea
- COS
- CWNO Brand
- First Street
- Food Lion
- Hannaford
- Harbor Bank
- Honest Catch
- HOS
- Meijer
- Nature’s Promise
- Open Acres
- Sandbar

- Waterfront Bistro.

Avanti Frozen Foods Recalls Shrimp for Salmonella Risk
On June 25, 2021, Avanti Frozen Foods recalled packages of frozen, pre-cooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp after a Salmonella outbreak.
Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Avanti Frozen Shrimp
The recalled frozen shrimp has been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Weltevreden. At least 6 people weresickened in Nevada and Arizona between February and April 2021, including 2 people who were hospitalized due to a severe illness, according to the outbreak investigation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More recent illnesses may not have been reported yet, so the case count may continue to grow.
Kader Exports Recalls Shrimp for Salmonella Risk
In August 2020, Kader Exports recalled frozen shrimp after FDA tests on an item were positive for Salmonella bacteria contamination.
No illnesses were reported as of August 11. The recall involves pre-cooked, frozen, peeled, and de-veined shrimp products that were sold in 1-lb, 1.5-lb, and 2-lb. bags from February 2020 to May 2020.
The shrimp was sold at grocery stores like Costco, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Tops, The Fresh Market, and more.
The recall includes shrimp sold under the following brand-names:
- AQUA STAR RESERVE
- CENSEA
- FRESH MARKET
- KIRKLAND Signature (Costco)
- TOPS
- UNISTAR
- WELLSLEY FARMS (BJ’s Wholesale Club)
Signs & Symptoms of Salmonella Food Poisoning
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning. Healthy people often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare cases, infections can result in a bloodstream infection and severe complications, such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis, or death.
