FDA Warning: Rite Aid Eye Drops May Cause Infections
In October 2023, the FDA issued a Safety Warning for 27 eye drop products, including several products from Rite Aid, due to insanitary manufacturing conditions that could result in severe eye infections.
How Many Eye Infections Were Reported?
There were six (6) reports of adverse events linked to Rugby® and Leader® eye drops in the FDA warning. The reports include people who suffered vision loss, blurry vision, and burning eyes.
Rite Aid Eye Drops Linked to Infection Risk
The list of eye drops consumers should NOT use includes 6 products from Rite Aid, including:
- Rite Aid Lubricant Eye Drops 15 ml (twin pack): Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Eye Drops 0.5% w/v
- Rite Aid Lubricant Eye Drops 10 ml (twin pack): Propylene Glycol Eye Drops 0.6% w/v
- Rite Aid Gentle Lubricant Gel Eye Drops 15 ml: Hypromellose 0.3%, Glycerin 0.2%, Dextran 70 0.1% Eye Drops
- Rite Aid Lubricant Gel Drops 15 ml: Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Eye Drops 1% w/v
- Rite Aid Lubricating Gel Drops 10 ml: Polyethylene Glycol 400 0.4% & Propylene Glycol 0.3% Eye Drops
- Rite Aid Multi-Action Relief Drops 15 ml: Polyvinyl Alcohol 0.5% w/v & Povidone 0.6% w/v & Tetrahydrozoline Hydrochloride 0.05% Eye Drops
What Happened?
FDA inspectors found “insanitary conditions” and dangerous bacteria in critical parts of the facility where these eye drops are manufactured. On October 25, the agency requested a recall for all lots of eye drops that were made in this facility due to a risk of severe eye infections.
Drug-Resistant Bacteria Can Cause Deadly Infections
Back in May 2023, the FDA found a drug-resistant form of Pseudmononas in EzriCare Artificial Tears. There were 81 infections reported, including 14 people who lost their vision and 4 people who died when the infection spread to the bloodstream.
What Should I Do?
People who have been using these eye drops should seek medical care if they develop any symptoms of an infection, such as:
- Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye.
- Eye pain or discomfort.
- Redness of the eye or eyelid.
- Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
