Rad Power Bikes Lawsuit Filed After 12-Year-Old Dies

In August 2022, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the parents of Molly Steinsapir, a 12-year-old girl who died while riding on a RadPower e-bike that was manufactured by Rad Power Bikes Inc.

What Happened?

According to the lawsuit, Molly was riding on the back of the RadRunner e-bike that was driven by her 11-year-old friend and neighbor. They crashed at the bottom of a steep hill, and although Molly was wearing a helmet, she hit her head and never woke up.

Lawsuit Claims Rad Power E-Bike is Dangerous

The lawsuit alleges that the RadRunner was dangerously defective because it began to “shake and wobble” at the bottom of the hill.

Rad also chose to use disc brakes in conjunction with a quick-release mechanism for detaching the front wheel. This configuration is a “known safety hazard” and “highly dangerous” because it can cause the wheel to wobble or fall off during hard braking.

The lawsuit was filed on August 1, 2022 in the Superior Court of the State of California (Los Angeles County) — Case Number 22STCV24714.

Parents Beware: Heavy E-Bikes Need Strong Brakes

After the lawsuit was filed, an article on Bicycling cited many complaints from parents who experienced brake issues with RadRunner e-bikes their kids were riding, including sudden loss of braking power causing a crash, or the front wheel coming off the bike as they were riding it. Other parents “had no idea that their kids were riding heavy electric bikes that couldn’t stop properly without frequent maintenance.”

RadWagon E-Bikes Recalled After 8 People Injured in Crashes

In November 2022, Rad Power Bikes recalled about 29,300 RadWagon 4 Electric Cargo Bikes because the tires could deflate and cause a crash.

Rad Power said it received 137 reports of tires blowing out, deflating and separating from the sidewalls.

There were 8 injuries including 5 reports of road rash, cuts and/or bruises and 1 report of a broken wrist, and 1 report of a broken arm, according to the recall notice.

The company explained that “the rim strip on the tires can be misaligned, causing the tube to pop and damage the tire. Additionally, the tires with a ribbed sidewall can unexpectedly go flat, risking serious injuries from loss of control and/or crash.”

The recalled e-bikes were sold at Rad Power Bikes stores nationwide and online from September 2020 to August 2022 for about $2,000.
