October 17, 2023 — A lawsuit has been filed by a woman from New York who had to have surgery for a severe eye infection after using The Laundress cleaning products.
The plaintiff, Suzanne H., claims that she started using The Laundress products in 2019 and continued using them until 2022.
In May 2022, she saw a doctor due to symptoms of an eye infection, including discharge from her right eye, which was dry, painful, and highly sensitive to light. Her doctor prescribed several medications.
The medications seemed to work at first, but the painful symptoms continued. In July 2022, she had an eye culture that tested positive for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria that is extremely dangerous because it can resist antibiotics.
She completed multiple rounds of antibiotics, but ultimately needed a surgery that involved drilling through her nasal bone to access her tear duct to resolve the infection, according to her lawsuit.
The surgery caused bruising, swelling, scarring to her face, as well as pain and a continued need for antibiotics and eye drops.
In December 2022, The Laundress issued a massive recall for about 8 million bottles of laundry detergent and household cleaning products.
The Laundress warned that the recalled products may be contaminated with bacteria, such as Pseudominosa and others.
Her lawsuit accuses The Laundress and its parent company, Unilever, of selling cleaning products that were defective because they were contaminated with bacteria.
Her lawsuit was filed on September 1, 2023 in the Supreme Court of the State of New York.
