Pillsbury Flour Recalled for E. coli
June 2019 — Over 4,600 cases of Pillsbury Best® bread flour were recalled in 10 states due to possible E. coli contamination. No illnesses have been linked to the Pillsbury flour.
This is the second recall for Pillsbury flour in 2019, with the first recall issued in January due to Salmonella concerns.
What Flour Was Recalled?
Hometown Food Co. recalled 5-pound bags of “Pillsbury Best Bread Flour” with UPC Code 0 5150020031 5 and any of the following lot code and use-by dates:
- Lot Code: 8 342 with Use-By Date: JUN 08 2020
- Lot Code: 8 343 with Use-By Date: JUN 09 2020
The codes are printed on the side of the flour package under the Nutrition Facts.
Where Was it Sold?
The recalled flour was shipped to retailers and distributors in 10 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
What is the Problem?
The flour may contain wheat that is contaminated with E. coli. The product was manufactured by ADM Milling Co. at a mill in Buffalo, New York. The same mill also recalled all-purpose flour sold under the ALDI Baker’s Corner® and King Arthur® brands due to E. coli.
How Many People Are Sick?
The recalled flour products have been linked to an ongoing outbreak of E. coli O26 illnesses. At least 17 people have been infected in 8 states since December 2018. One bag of flour has tested positive for the outbreak strain of E. coli, according to an outbreak investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Symptoms of E. coli Food Poisoning
The symptoms of infections with E. coli are different for each person, but often include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and sometimes a fever. About 5 to 10% of people who are diagnosed an E. coli infection will develop a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
