Ohio Woman Files Lawsuit After Philippe Richard Pressure Cooker Explodes

In September 2019, a lawsuit (PDF) was filed by Soumia S., a woman from Ohio who suffered “serious and substantial burns” when her Philippe Richard Pressure Cooker exploded in her kitchen in September 2017.

The pressure cooker’s lid suddenly exploded off the pot when she was cooking dinner, according to the lawsuit. The food blew out of the pot and severely burned her back, arms, legs, and 25% of her skin. She was hospitalized for 2 days in the burn unit at Ohio State University.

The lawsuit claims that the Philippe Richard Pressure Cooker is defective, unreasonable dangerous, and failed to prevent the lid from blowing off during normal use.

The lawsuit was filed against Tabletops Unlimited, Inc., doing business as TTU, in the Superior Court of California for the County of Los Angeles (Central District) on September 18, 2019 — Case Number 19STCV33402.

What is the Philippe Richard Pressure Cooker?

Tabletops Unlimited, Inc. is a California-based company that manufactures the Philippe Richard Pressure Cooker. It is a stovetop pressure cooker (also called a “manual pressure cooker”) that must be placed on a hot stove to build up heat.

Philippe Richard pressure cookers are sold nationwide in stores like Kohl’s, Walmart, JC Penny, online retailers like Amazon, and more.

How Does It Work?

The lid locks onto the pot with a clamp. The clamp is supposed to secure the lid a rubber ring (or seal) around the rim of the pot. If the lid is locked on properly, it prevents steam from escaping as the liquid boils, produces steam, pressure inside the pot increases, and internal temperatures exceed 200ºF. This cooks food faster and more efficiently than a traditional pot on a stove.

What is the Problem?

Consumers have been burned when their Philippe Richard pressure cooker malfunctioned and exploded. The problem is that the lid can explode off the pot during normal use, according to a recent lawsuit.
