Dole Parsley Recalled for E. coli

On September 10, 2021, Dole Fresh Vegetables recalled Dole® Curly Leaf Parsley due to possible contamination with non-O157 Shiga-toxin producing E. coli.

The parsley was harvested on August 18, 2021, and August 19, 2021.

No illnesses were reported. Instead, the recall was issued after a routine sample collected in Michigan tested positive for Shiga-toxin producing E. coli.

The recalled parsley was distributed in Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Missouri in two pack sizes: 60-count (74 cases) and 30-count (39 cases) with product code 0 07143 000310 3. Individual bunches of parsley sold in stores have a PLU number on binding twist-ties of 4899 and a UPC code of 0 3383 80330 0.

Buurma Farms Parsley Recalled for E. coli

In September 2021, Buurma Farms Inc. recalled 320 boxes of plain (flat leaf) parsley due to a risk of contamination with Shiga-toxin producing E. coli.

The recalled parsley is Buurma® Plain (flat leaf) Parsley with a harvest date of August 30, 2021 from their Gregory, Michigan location.

No illnesses were reported. Instead, a random, routine sample collected at a distribution center in Michigan tested positive for non-O157 STEC (Shiga-toxin producing E. Coli).

The parsley was sold and shipped in 30-count cartons to retailers in Ohio and Michigan between 8/31/21 and 9/3/21.

It was also sold in 60-count crates to wholesalers in Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, and South Carolina between 9/2/21 and 9/4/21.

Consumers may have also purchased individual bunches of flat parsley, which may have a “BUURMA FARMS Plain Parsley” twist-tie with a PLU number of 4901 and a UPC code of 33383 80125

What is Shiga-toxin producing E. coli?

Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes deadly food poisoning in people who eat contaminated food. The symptoms may include stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting, or fever. About 5 to 10% of people who are diagnosed with a STEC infection develop Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is a life-threatening type of kidney failure.
