Are You Having Surgery for Ovarian Cancer?

Talc can travel through the vagina, uterus, and get into your ovaries if it is sprinkled on the genital area. If you think talcum powder may have contributed to your ovarian cancer, you should consider asking your doctor to preserve tissue samples when you have surgery. If the tissue contains particles of talc, it will strengthen a legal claim against companies that failed to warn you about the risk of cancer.

Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson is facing around 60,000 lawsuits involving women with ovarian cancer or mesothelioma who used baby powder and other talcum powder products. Our lawyers are investigating cases involving the following products:

$300 Million+ in Ovarian Cancer Jury Awards

In May 2017, $110 million was awarded to Louis Slemp, a 62 year-old woman from Virginia who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012 after using Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower for over 40 years.

In October 2016, a jury in St. Louis, Missouri awarded $70 million to a woman from California who was diagnosed with statge-4 metastatic ovarian cancer in 2012 after using baby powder on her genitals for 45 years.

In May 2016, another jury in St. Louis awarded $55 million to a woman from South Dakota who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using baby powder for nearly 40 years.

In February 2016, the family of a woman from Alabama who died of ovarian cancer was awarded $72 million by a jury in St. Louis. Her lawyers said Johnson & Johnson consciously chose to ignore warning signs and continued promoting talcum powder for adult women.

Talc and Asbestos

Before the 1970s, talcum powder products were sometimes contaminated with asbestos. Talc and asbestos are naturally-occurring minerals with similar structures that are often found in the same mines. Asbestos is a known carcinogen linked to mesothelioma, an aggressive form of lung cancer that occurs in epithelial cells. In 2015, a woman who was diagnosed with mesothelioma after breathing baby powder was awarded $13 million.

Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer

Similar to mesothelioma in the lungs, the most common type of ovarian cancer also occurs in epithelial cells on the outside of the ovary. Experts are concerned that talc particles in the ovaries could cause long-term inflammation and increase the risk of ovarian cancer. Studies dating back to the 1970s have found particles of talc in the ovaries of women with cancer, proving that it can travel through the entire reproductive system.

What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer occurs when cells start growing uncontrollably and form a mass called a tumor. The ovaries are two reproductive glands that produce eggs. It is the deadliest cancer in the reproductive system.

What is the risk?

According to the American Cancer Society, the average lifetime risk of ovarian cancer for women in the United States is about 1 in 75 (1.4%). They estimate that over 14,280 women will die from ovarian cancer in 2016. Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of cancers in women.

Talc May Increase Cancer Risk by 20-30%

In 2003, researchers analyzed data from 16 studies involving nearly 12,000 women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene. They found a 33% increased risk of ovarian cancer associated with talcum powder, which translates to a 1.8% lifetime risk.
