In November 2021, two types of Odor-Eaters sprays were recalled after they tested positive for benzene, a cancer-causing chemical.
What Odor-Eaters Products Were Recalled?
The recall includes 41 lots of two Odor-Eaters spray products (Odor-Eaters Spray Powder and Stink Stoppers) with expiration dates between October 1, 2021 and August 2023.
What is the Risk?
Internal testing identified “low-level benzene contamination,” but that “the levels detected are not expected to cause adverse health consequences in consumers,” according to the manufacturer.
What is Benzene?
Benzene is a known human carcinogen. People can be exposed to benzene by breathing it, swallowing it, and absorbing it through the skin. “It can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening,” according to the Odor-Eaters recall website.
What is Odor-Eaters Spray?
Odor-Eaters and Stink Stopper sprays are antifungal products that are used to reduce foot odor. They are packaged in aerosol cans and sprayed on the feet. The recalled products were distributed nationwide in the U.S. through various retailers.
What is the Problem?
Odor-Eaters foot spray joins a growing list of consumer products that have tested positive for benzene, including deodorant sprays, anti-fungal foot sprays (Lotrimin and Tinactin), and sunscreen sprays.
