NutiBullet Explosion Lawsuits
Dozens of class actions and individual lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer of NutriBullet, claiming it exploded and caused serious injuries. The injuries include burns, cuts, lacerations, and more.
NutriBullet Explosions
Victims say the NutriBullet is dangerous because the canister can pressurize, separate, and explode. The manufacturer of NutriBullet insists that it is safe when used as directed, but many people who were injured say their NutriBullet exploded without warning while they were making cold foods.
Is the NutriBullet Dangerous?
Lawyers for people who were injured say the NutriBullet is dangerous because explosions can occur without warning, even when consumers follow the instructions and make cold foods, because heat from the blades can generate pressure in the canister.
NutriBullet Class Action Lawsuit
In July 2018, a class action lawsuit was filed by a woman from South Carolina who suffered 2nd-degree and 1st-degree burns when her NutriBullet 900 Series exploded while she was blending water, walnuts, sea moss and cinnamon for 60 seconds:
“The hot mixture spewed onto [the plaintiff], damaging her clothing. But, more importantly, it got on her arms and chest causing her skin to burn and requiring her to seek medical treatment at Joseph M. Still Burn Centers, Inc. and Health First in Charleston, South Carolina.”
NutiBullet Explosion & Burn Injury Lawsuits
One of the victims, Sheryl Utal, used her NutriBullet every day for years to make smoothies — until one morning it exploded and caused 2nd-degree burns to her arms, chest, and face:
“It just came flying out all over me, all over the kitchen, the ceilings, the walls. And it was on my chest. It also had hit me in the face as well.”
Another lawsuit was filed by Rosa Rivera, the mother of the late Latin singer Jenni Rivera. Her lawyers say NutriBullet is defective because the spinning blades cause heat and pressure to build up inside the canister, which can result in an explosion of scalding-hot foods.
What is the Problem?
NutriBullet has a powerful 600-watt motor with razor-sharp spinning blades that pulverize food into smoothies. If the food inside gets too hot, the pressure inside the canister can increase and it can explode when it is opened. There are also reports of the canister unthreading itself from the base of the blender and exploding hot food or liquids.
Magic Bullet Blender Lawsuits
The creator of the NutriBullet, Homeland Housewares, was previously sued by people who experienced similar injuries when their Magic Bullet blenders exploded. Lawyers accuse Homeland Housewares of failing to fix design flaws and knowingly selling a dangerous product.
According to a lawyer for Pete Damiano, a man who suffered severe facial lacerations when his NutriBullet exploded:
“The company is aware of the problem and, in fact, we have brought a prior lawsuit against a common manufacturer based on the Magic Bullet’s similar design defect.”
NutriBullet Strengthens Safety Warnings
NutriBullet has recently started to sell the product with prominent warnings, such as “Do not operate continuously for more than one minute” and “NEVER blend warm, hot or carbonated ingredients.”
The instruction manual for NutriBullet now warns against blending hot ingredients, which could create internal pressure inside the sealed canister. This increases the risk of an explosion and burn injuries.
