UPDATE: Heartburn Drugs Increase Risk of Death

July 2017 — Researchers have linked the use of PPI heartburn drugs with up to a 50% increased risk of death compared to H2-blocker heartburn drugs, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open. Can Heartburn Medications Kill You?

What is Nexium?

Nexium is a medication that prevents heartburn and acid reflux disease. It is one of the best-selling medications worldwide and has been on the market since 2001. Unfortunately, Nexium has also been linked to a wide range of severe side effects. The FDA has issued multiple warnings about kidney inflammation, bone fractures, low magnesium levels, and diarrhea from Clostridium difficile infections.

Nephritis Warnings Added to Nexium Label

In December 2014, the FDA updated the label to include stronger warnings about kidney inflammation that can potentially lead to kidney failure. The side effect, also known as nephritis, can cause the following symptoms:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Fever
  • Changes in urine output
  • Drowsiness or confusion
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Rash
  • Swelling of the body
  • Weight gain from fluid-retention

Nexium Linked to 20-50% Increased Risk of Kidney Disease

The first case reports linking Nexium and nephritis were published in the 1990s. Since then, dozens of cases have been reported worldwide. Some victims required dialysis and long-term treatment for kidney failure. When researchers at Johns Hopkins University investigated the risk, they found a 20-50% increased risk of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) associated with once-daily or twice-daily doses of Nexium and other heartburn drugs in the PPI class. The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine in January 2016.

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but our lawyers are not filing a Nexium class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of people who developed severe kidney side effects, such as:

About Class Actions

Class actions are an ideal way for a lot of people to collectively seek refunds or reimbursement from the same manufacturer. However, they can have disadvantages for people with severe injuries. Class actions are designed to maximize efficiency — not maximizing compensation for plaintiffs with the most severe injuries.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Many lawsuits have been filed by people who were injured by Nexium, but not as part of a class action. Instead, they are individual lawsuits filed by people who have their own lawyer. Our lawyers specialize in filing individual lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies that fail to warn about side effects. We believe there is no excuse for downplaying life-threatening risks like kidney failure.

If you decide to file a lawsuit, we may be able to help you seek compensation for your physical and emotional pain and suffering, past and future medical expenses, long-term injuries or disabilities, lost income, and more.
