Hoverboard Fires & Battery Explosions
Since 2015, there have been over 300 reports of hoverboard fires or batteries overheating, including a deadly house fire in 2017 that killed two young children in Pennsylvania. Over 500,000 hoverboards have now been recalled by more than a dozen manufacturers.
What is the Problem?
Hoverboards and self-balancing scooters contain lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are lightweight, powerful, and recharge quickly, but they also contain highly-flammable chemicals. Poorly-manufactured batteries can easily overheat, catch on fire, or suddenly explode.
