On July 14, 2021, Johnson & Johnson recalled certain Neutrogena sunscreens due to high levels of benzene, a cancer-causing chemical.

The recall included the following spray sunscreens (or “aerosol sunscreens”):

What is Benzene?
Benzene is a toxic chemical that is classified as a human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance). In large amounts, benzene can cause serious health problems when it is absorbed through the skin, breathed in the air, or swallowed.
How Does Benzene Get in Sunscreen?
Benzene is not an ingredient that is added to sunscreen. Even so, it has been found in dozens of sunscreens and sun-care products, likely due to manufacturing problems.
Johnson & Johnson said that “benzene is not an ingredient in any of our sunscreen products,” but it was found in finished products. “We are investigating the cause of this issue,” the company said.
Independent Lab Finds Benzene in 78 Sunscreens and Sun-Care Products
In May 2021, the independent laboratory and pharmacy Valisure found benzene in 78 sunscreens and sun-care products (about 27% of products they tested), including sunscreen sprays, lotions, gels, and aloe vera.
Benzene Linked to Blood Cancers
Benzene is specifically linked to blood cancers, such as:
- Leukemia
- Lymphoma
- Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
- Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL)
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)
- Multiple Myeloma
- Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
- And more
