January 2, 2023 — An outbreak of Salmonella has been linked to SunSprouts Alfalfa Sprouts, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
On December 29, health officials in Nebraska announced that a recall had been issued by SunSprout Enterprises for two lots (#4211 and #5211) of raw alfalfa sprouts in plastic clamshell containers with best-by dates between 12/10/22 and 12/27/22.
According to the recall:
“As of December 29, 2022, 16 ill individuals reported consuming SunSprout brand alfalfa sprouts between December 4-13, either at local restaurants or in their homes after purchasing from local grocery stores.”
Tests on 8 sick people showed that they were all infected with genetically-similar strains of Salmonella Typhimurium. Tests on the other 7 sick people weree still pending, according to the report.
In the FDA recall, SunSprout claimed that it had “received no complaints or reports of illness due to this recalled product.”
Furthermore, SunSprout said that the “recall is a result of a preliminary investigation by the State of Nebraska in connection with CDC of an outbreak of illness likely associated with alfalfa sprouts.”
SunSprout said it is investigating how the alfalfa sprouts were handled and stored after leaving its Nebraska facility.
