What is Motions?
Motions® is a brand of hair relaxer products. These kits contain chemicals that women apply to their hair to make it smooth and straight. The original Motions® Classic Relaxers are lye-based, which means they contain sodium hydroxide. There is also Motions® No-Lye Relaxer, which contains calcium hydroxide and other chemicals.
Chemicals in Hair Relaxers
Hair relaxers may also contain other chemicals that are not on the label. These chemicals could be carcinogenic or hormonally-active, and they can get into the body through sores and irritated skin on the scalp that commonly occur during the hair relaxing process.
For example, phthalates could be disguised as “perfume” or “fragrance” on the label. Formaldehyde, parabens, bisphenol A, DEHP, and other chemicals have also been found in hair relaxers.
Health Risks Linked to Hair Relaxers
Unfortunately, recent studies have raised concerns that hair relaxers could have severe side effects for women, such as:
Motions Hair Relaxer Lawsuit Filed by Woman in New York
A woman in New York who developed uterine fibroids has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturers of Motions® Hair Relaxers.
The lawsuit was filed on November 21, 2022 by Teresa S., a woman who alleges that harmful endocrine-disrupting chemicals in Motions® and Olive Oil Girls® caused her to develop uterine fibroids. Her fibroids had to be surgically removed in June 2021.
According to her lawsuit, she began using hair-straightening products in 1988, and continued to use them until around 2014. She accuses the manufacturers of failing to warn women about the risk of fibroids and other serious health problems.
Her hair relaxer lawsuit was filed against Strength of Nature LLC, Godrej Consumer Products, Dabur USA, and Namaste Laboratories on November 21, 2022 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York — Case Number 1:22-cv-07082.

Examples of Studies Linking Hair Relaxers and Cancer
Health concerns surrounding hair relaxers have been increasing in recent years. In 2019, a study published in the International Journal of Cancer found a 30% increased risk of breast cancer for women who used lye-based hair relaxers.
And in October 2022, another study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute estimated that 4% of women who frequently used hair relaxers would develop uterine cancer by the age of 70, which was twice the risk of women who did not use hair relaxers.
