In April 2024, the CDC reported a Salmonella outbreak linked to fresh basil had sickened 12 people in 7 states, including 1 person who was hospitalized due to a severe illness.
What is the Risk?
Most people who are infected with Salmonella experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. The symptoms can start anywhere from 6 hours to 6 days after eating contaminated food. Most people recover within about a week without needing medical attention.
Some people — especially children younger than 5 years, adults 65 years and older, and people with weakened immune systems — may experience more severe illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization.
