MaryRuth’s Liquid Probiotic Recall
In October 2021, MaryRuth’s recalled Liquid Probiotic for Infants due to a risk of deadly infections with the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. No infections were reported, but one infant suffered temporary diarrhea, according to the company.
What is the Risk?
Babies who ingest this bacteria can develop deadly infections. The risk is greatest for immunocompromised infants. The recall warns:
“There is the chance that the infant’s immature gut will not be able to prevent P. aeruginosa from gaining access to the blood, and from there it can disseminate elsewhere in the body, resulting in the possibility of serious adverse health consequences.”
What Products Were Recalled?
The recall only involves two lots — Lot #100420218 and Lot #100520218 — with UPC barcode number 856645008587.
The product was distributed nationwide through Target, Amazon, and direct sales from the company’s website.
What is the P. aeruginosa?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacteria that commonly causes healthcare-associated infections, including pneumonia, bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections, and surgical site infections. Some types of multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa are resistant to nearly all antibiotics, which makes infections nearly impossible to cure.
