53,000 LumaRail Bed Assist Rails Recalled After 1 Death Reported
In February 2023, Platinum Health recalled about 53,000 LumaRail Bed Assist Rails after the death of an 81-year-old man who suffocated. These recalled bed rails can pose serious, life-threatening safety hazards, including entrapment, suffocation, asphyxia, and death, according to safety officials.
What Happened?
In October 2021, an 81-year-old man at a nursing home in Pennsylvania died of positional asphyxia after he became trapped between a LumaRail Bed Rail and his mattress.
What is the Problem?
LumaRail bed rails are portable devices that are placed at the edge of a bed. They are advertised to help people with mobility issues sit up or get out of bed, but the rails themselves can pose deadly safety risks.
According to the CPSC recall notice:
“When the recalled bed rails are attached to an adult’s bed, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the bed rail and the side of the mattress. This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation.”
What Bed Rails Were Recalled?
The recall involves the following models of LumaRail Bed Rails:
- Bed Assist Rail with Legs (model PHB4000)
- Free Standing Bed Assist Rail (model PHB6000)
- DoubleSafe Bed Assist Rail (model PHB7000D)
Where Were They Sold?
LumaRail bed rails were sold nationwide from July 2015 through December 2022 for between $65 and $100. They were sold through online medical supply stores, including RehabMart and Fabrication Enterprises, as well as websites side as PlatinumHealthLLC.com, Amazon, Walmart.com, eBay, and Overstock, and more.
What is the Risk?
- Entrapment
- Becoming trapped between the mattress and bed rail
- Falling out of bed
- Positional asphyxia
- Asphyxiation
- Suffocation
- Death
Safety Concerns About Adult Portable Bed Rails
More than 1 million adult portable bed rails have been recalled by various manufacturers in recent years by the CPSC.
Entrapment can occur in several ways. For example, if the bed rail is not held securely against the mattress, a person can fall between the bed rail and the mattress and get stuck. People can also get their head or neck trapped inside the bed rail, or in other parts of the rail.
There is also a risk of falls. Even when bed rails are used correctly, they can present a deadly safety hazard for certain individuals — especially for elderly people with physical limitations or altered mental status, such as dementia or delirium, according to the FDA.
