August 31, 2016 — Ton Shen Health is recalling Life Rising DHZC-2 Chinese herbal supplements because they contain dangerous amounts of lead.
The tablets have 56-times the amount of lead that would poison a child, according to the FDA outbreak investigation.
The agency is investigating six adverse events, including two deaths that may have been caused by DHZC-2.
Two victims are children with elevated lead levels, according to the Cook County Department of Health in Chicago. Lead poisoning in children can cause learning disabilities, developmental delays, and behavior problems.
The FDA is asking supplement retailers to contact any customer who bought DHZC-2 in the last 36 months to warn them about the recall. The product came in 1.6-ounce white plastic bottles and was sold nationwide. All lots are being recalled and sales are discontinued.
Lead is a highly toxic metal that accumulates in the body. Lead poisoning can be deadly. Even small amounts are harmful. The long-term health risks include high blood pressure, infertility, nerve damage, muscle pain, irritability, and more.
