Women who are killed and injured during labor and delivery is a much too common occasion in the United States. ABC News reported that a study that will be released soon found that the number of women who died in California after giving birth has nearly tripled in the last ten years from 5.6 deaths per 100,000 to 16.9 per 100,000 in 2006. The number of women dying during or shortly after childbirth isn’t just on the rise in California. The Joint Commission, an accreditation and certification group for hospitals, also noticed the trend. Dr. Mark Chassin, president of the Joint Commission, recently stated that “the rate of maternal death today is not acceptable in the United States” Even more tragic is the fact that as many as half of those deaths are preventable.
