Kinder Chocolate Recalled for Salmonella Risk
In April 2022, just before Easter, Ferrero USA Inc. recalled Kinder® Happy Moments Chocolate Assortment and Kinder® Mix Chocolate Treats because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
What Kinder Chocolate Was Recalled?
The recall in the U.S. involves two types of Kinder chocolate products:
- Kinder Happy Moments Milk Chocolate and Crispy Wafers Assortment: 14.1 OZ (400g) square box with lid — Best By July 18, 2022 (back panel) — Lot Codes 48RUP334; 48RUP335; 48RUP 336; 48RUP337 (back panel) — Sold at Costco in the Bay Area (California) and Northern Nevada and BJ’s Wholesale Club stores
- Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats Basket — 5.3 OZ (152g) cardboard basket — Best By July 30, 2022 (bottom of package) — Lot Code 03L 018AR – 306 — Sold at 14 Big Y Supermarket locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts
What is the Problem?
The Kinder chocolate products were recalled because they were made in a facility in Europe where Salmonella Typhimurium was found. The facility is linked to an outbreak in Europe.
How Many Kids Are Sick?
As of April 7, no illnesses have been reported in the U.S. — but dozens of illnesses have been reported across Europe. The outbreak is linked to Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs that were manufactured at the same facility as the recalled chocolate products in the U.S.

Symptoms of Salmonella Infections in Kids
Salmonella infections are not usually very serious for healthy adults, but young children can quickly develop life-threatening complications like dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhea.
The symptoms of a Salmonella infection may include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea (may be bloody)
- Fever
- Headache
