Safety Warning After Baby Dies in Kids2 Rocker
In June 2022, safety officials and Kids2 issued a Safety Warning after a baby died in a Kids2 Bright Starts Rocker in 2019.
“Kids2 Bright Starts and Baby Einstein Rockers should never be used for sleep and infants should never be unsupervised or unrestrained in the Rockers.”
What Happened?
In 2019, a baby died in the Kids II Bright Starts Disney Baby Minnie Mouse Stars and Smiles Infant-to-Toddler Rocker, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Many other rockers sold by Kids2 pose the same safety hazard.
Is There a Recall?
Kids2 did not recall the rockers. Kids2 has sold more than 1.8 million Rockers worldwide since 2012, but they did not issue a recall because the rockers are not advertised for infant sleep. Kids2 warns parents to never leave babies unattended in the rockers.
Baby Rockers & Inclined Sleepers
Baby rockers are similar to other types of inclined sleepers because they prop a baby up at an angle. Another problem is that caregivers commonly let babies sleep in rockers, fail to restrain them, or step away for a moment and leave the baby alone.
How Do Babies Suffocate?
If a baby is able to twist onto their side, or roll over from their back to their stomach, they can suffocate to death in minutes when their face gets trapped against the fabric sides of the product. Young infants who are propped upright can also suffocate due to “positional asphyxia,” which is when their chin hits their chest and compresses their airway.
Safe Sleep for Babies Act
Lawmakers have passed the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, which bans all inclined “rockers, bouncers, and other soothing infant seats regardless of whether they are intended and marketed for sleep.”
According to CPSC Commissioner Rich Trumka Jr., the agency will soon be investigating whether the Safe Sleep Act for Babies will ban the Kids2 Rockers and others like it, such as the Fisher-Price Rockers linked to 13 baby deaths.
