September 29, 2016 — Invokamet XR has been approved by the FDA despite lawsuits accusing Janssen Pharmaceuticals of downplaying side effects of canagliflozin.
Invokamet XR is an extended-release medication that combines metformin with canagliflozin (sold alone as Invokana).
Invokamet XR belongs to the SGLT2 inhibitor class of diabetes drugs. It controls blood-sugar levels by forcing the kidneys to remove more glucose from the body in urine.
Although it is not unusual for new medications to have unanticipated side effects, canagliflozin generated five FDA safety warnings between May 2015 and June 2016. Warnings were issued for the following side effects:
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Bone fractures
- Acute kidney injury
- Severe infections (bloodstream and kidney)
- Foot and toe amputations
Janssen Pharmaceuticals is accused of rushing canagliflozin to market without adequately studying its risks, downplaying side effects, and continuing to sell dangerous diabetes medications. Dozens of lawsuits have been filed nationwide by people who were diagnosed with ketoacidosis or kidney failure.
