FDA Tests Find Widely Inconsistent Levels of Belladonna

FDA tests found widely inconsistent levels of belladonna (deadly nightshade), a toxic plant that is extremely dangerous for babies. Hyland’s Teething Tablets were recalled for the same problem in October 2010.

10 Baby Deaths and 400 Illnesses in Six Years

Ten baby deaths and over 400 reports of babies who had seizures or symptoms of belladonna toxicity were reported from October 2010 to October 2016 by parents who gave babies Hyland’s Teething Tablets. According to one heart-wrenching report:

“My daughter had a seizure, lost consciousness, and stopped breathing about 30 minutes after I gave her three Hyland’s Teething Tablets… She had to receive mouth-to-mouth CPR to resume breathing and was brought to the hospital.”

CVS Stops Selling Homeopathic Teething Tablets & Gels

CVS Pharmacy stopped selling all homeopathic teething remedies in September 2016. In October 2016, Hyland’s said it would stop making the products, but did not issue a recall. The products remained in some stores and consumers’ homes. Hyland’s continued sales online.

FDA Warning: “Fundamental Lack of Control” Over Toxic Ingredients

The FDA warned consumers not to use Hylan’ds Teething Tablets in September 2016, and tests confirmed the risk of belladonna poisoning in January 2017. Even so, Hyland’s told customers they were safe.

In April 2017, the FDA sent a Letter (PDF) demanding a recall because the products “represent a serious health hazard” and “FDA action is necessary to protect public health and welfare.” According to the agency:

“This variability in belladonna alkaloid concentrations indicates a fundamental lack of control over the content of toxic chemicals in your drug.”

Deadly Nightshade Pills for Babies

Belladonna (deadly nightshade) is one of the most poisonous plants in the world. It doesn’t take much to poison a baby — especially babies who take many tablets over a few years as they go through teething.

The FDA warned that the baby’s kidney and liver may not be able to break down belladonna, even in extremely small amounts, and their kidneys may not be able to remove it from their body. This could lead to belladonna accumulating in their body and causing toxicity:

“The ability of infants to metabolize and eliminate belladonna alkaloids is impaired due to the complex development of hepatic enzymes and non-linear maturation of renal function.”
