Bagged Salads Linked to Parasite Outbreak
In June 2020, an outbreak of Cyclospora parasitic infections was reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The outbreak began on May 11. It was linked to bagged salads from Hy-Vee, ALDI, and Jewel-Osco stores in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Minnesota.
Hy-Vee Salad Recall for Risk of Cyclospora Contamination
June 20, 2020 — Hy-Vee Inc. recalled 12-oz bags of Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salad in 8 states due to potential contamination with Cyclospora parasites. The recall involves 12 oz. Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salad, all UPCs and expirations dates.
Where Was The Salad Sold?
The recalled salad was distributed to Hy-Vee grocery stores across its eight-state region of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
What is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite that spreads in feces and causes a gastrointestinal illness called “cyclosporiasis” when people eat contaminated food or water.
Signs of Cyclosporiasis
The most common sign of a Cyclospora infection is diarrhea — frequent bouts of watery, explosive bowel movements. This can persist for months, or seem to come and go, unless it is treated. It can lead to severe fatigue, weight-loss, and hospitalization.
