Hepatitis A Class Action Lawsuits
Class action lawsuits are often filed for everyone who was exposed to hepatitis A in major outbreaks of food poisoning. However, victims who were actually infected may be eligible to file an individual lawsuit.
What is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a contagious virus that spreads in fecal matter and causes liver inflammation. Large outbreaks are rare, but they do occur when food or water is contaminated. Hepatitis A also spreads by person-to-person contact, especially food-workers who do not wash their hands.
Symptoms of Infection
It takes 2-6 weeks after infection before symptoms appear. When they do, the symptoms usually worsen over a few days and persist for several months. These symptoms include:
- Dark urine
- Fatigue
- Itching
- Loss of appetite
- Low-grade fever
- Nausea and vomiting
- Pale or clay-colored stools
- Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
- Abdominal pain
Can I Get Sick Again?
No. The virus does not stay in the body after the infection is gone, and people who recover will have antibodies that makes them immune from re-infection.
How Common is Hepatitis A?
An estimated 2,500 people were infected with hepatitis A in the United States in 2014. It has become less common since a vaccine was introduced in 1995.
Outlook & Prognosis
Most healthy adults recover within 3 months without medical treatment, but some patients must be hospitalized for treatment. In rare cases, hepatitis A causes permanent liver damage, liver failure, or death.
