Stater Bros. Ground Beef Linked to Deadly Salmonella Outbreak
In November 2019, Central Valley Meat Co. recalled several Stater Bros. ground beef products after a deadly outbreak of Salmonella Dublin sickened at least 10 people in 6 states in August and September 2019. The outbreak was unusually severe, with 8 of the victims hospitalized, including one person who died in California, according to the CDC.
The recall involves the following ground beef items:
- 1-lb. chub packages of “STATER BROS. 100% PURE GROUND BEEF 96% LEAN 4% FAT” with lot 2049 on the retail label; lot 19204 on the case label; and Use By 08-14-19.
- 2-lb. chub packages of “STATER BROS. 100% PURE GROUND BEEF 93% LEAN 7% FAT” with lot 2049 on the retail label; lot 19204 on the case label; and Use By 08-14-19.
- 20-lb. cases containing “STATER BROS 93/7 Ground Beef 10# Chub 10 Lb. Chubs/ 2 Count” with lot 19204 on the case label and Use By 08-14-19.
Over 250 Illnesses Linked to JBS Beef
November 15, 2018 — The CDC outbreak investigation has linked recalled JBS beef and ground beef with 246 Salmonella illnesses in 25 states from August 5, 2018 through October 16, 2018. At least 59 people were hospitalized. No deaths were reported.
In October 2018, JBS Tolleson Inc. announced a recall for 6.5 million pounds of raw beef products and ground beef that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The products were sold at Walmart and other stores under the following brand-names:
- Cedar River Farms Natural
- Comnor Perfect Choice
- Gourmet Burger
- Grass Run Farms Natural
- JBS Generic
- Showcase
- Walmart
The recalled beef items, including ground beef, were packaged between July 26, 2018 and September 7, 2018. The recalled products are marked “EST. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Symptoms & Complications of Salmonella
Most people who are infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.
In some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other places in the body.
