Green Onions Recalled for Salmonella Risk
In October 2024, Church Brothers Farms recalled about 1,271 cases of green onions that were sold at Trader Joe’s and other grocery stores in 11 states.
What Happened?
Trader Joe’s green onions and other products may be contaminated with Salmonella, which is a bacteria that can severe and sometimes deadly food poisoning. No illnesses were reported as of October 18, but a sample of the green onions tested positive for Salmonella in Canada.
How To Identify Recalled Green Onions
The recall includes the following green onion products in the U.S.:
- Church Brothers Green Onions: Lot Code CB272378, clear bag with product code located in front of the bag.
- Trader Joe’s Green Onions: Lot Code CB272378, Pack Date 092524, Brand retail bag with pack date label on back of bag.
- Imperial Fresh Green Onions: Lot Code CB272378, Clear bag, product code located in front of the bag.
Where Were They Sold?
Church Brothers Farms sold green onions to a small number of retail grocery stores (such as Trader Joe’s) and food-service customers in these 11 states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Church Brothers Farms also recalled green onions in Canada, including: Imperial Fresh Green Onions (Lot Code CB272378).
Did Anyone Get Sick?
No illnesses were reported, according to the recall: “To the knowledge of Church Brothers Farms, no illnesses have occurred or been reported to date.”
However, there was “a single product sample collected by Canadian Food Inspection Agency that indicated the presence of Salmonella,” according to the recall announcement.
What Is My Risk?
People who eat food that is contaminated with Salmonella can develop food poisoning, especially if the food is not thoroughly cooked to a temperature that will kill Salmonella bacteria.
Healthy people who are infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In some cases, these infections can be serious and sometimes deadly.
