Unsafe Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rockers Linked to 14 Deaths
In January 2024, yet another tragic infant death was linked to the Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Baby Rocker, according to Consumer Reports.
What Happened?
In the report, a healthy 6-month-old baby girl died in November 2023 when her father put her in the rocker asleep and fell asleep next to her. When he woke up 1 hour and 15 minutes later, the baby was on her stomach, face to the side.
Another scary report from March 2023 involved a close call. A 9-month-old baby was put in the Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rocker awake, restrained, and supervised, when she rolled onto her side and got stuck. “Had I not been sitting there watching her, she wouldn’t have been able to get out of the position,” the parent of the child wrote.
Consumer Reports Demands Recall for Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rockers
In response to these incidents, Consumer Reports sent a letter outlining their safety concerns and urging government safety officials “to press Fisher-Price to recall them as quickly as possible.”
Safety Officials Warn Parents: Never Let Babies Sleep in Rockers
In June 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning about 13 deaths in the Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rocker and reminded parents: “Rockers should never be used for sleep and infants should never be unsupervised or unrestrained in the Rockers.”
What is the Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rocker?
Fisher-Price has sold more than 17 million baby rockers worldwide since the 1990s. These products are used as a portable baby seat and a rocking chair for toddlers. Even so, the rockers are commonly used for sleep, and many parents fail to use the restraint harnesses.
What is the Problem?
Unfortunately, Between 2009 and 2023, tat 14 baby deaths in Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rockers and Newborn-to-Toddler Rockers. Many of these tragic accidents occurred when babies twisted onto their side or rolled over, causing them to suffocate when their face became trapped against the non-breathable plastic fabric seat pad.
