December 4, 2014 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to beware hidden, dangerous ingredients in several dietary supplements marketed for weight-loss, including two “bee pollen” diet pills.
FDA warnings include:
Laboratory tests confirmed that all of these products contains sibutramine. They are sold on various websites and possibly in some retail stores. At least one product, Bee Thin, was sold on the website www.beethinzt.com, but it now redirects to another website selling other diet pills.
Sibutramine
Sibutramine is the active ingredient in the prescription medication Meridia, which was a prescription obesity treatment. Meridia was pulled off the market in October 2010, after the SCOUT clinical trial linked it with a 16% increased risk of cardiovascular side effects compared to a placebo.
The most serious side effects of sibutramine include life-threatening interactions with other medications, as well as heart problems:
“Sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke.”
