July 21, 2016 — The FDA is investigating reports of hair loss, hair breakage, balding, itching, and rash associated with the use of WEN Cleansing Conditioner by Chaz Dean.
As of July 7, 2016, the FDA has received 127 adverse event reports directly from consumers. The FDA is also investigating another 21,000 complaints reported directly to Chaz Dean and Guthy-Renker.
It is the largest number of complaints ever associated with any cosmetic hair-cleansing product, including cleansing conditioners.
The FDA is asking consumers to report any reactions to help them figure out what is causing the problem. An attorney in Texas who filed a class action lawsuit explained to CBS News:
“It contains virtually no cleanser. It’s like using lotion to wash your hair, so instead of removing the product, when you rinse it off, it just becomes impacted in your hair follicle.”
Last year, over 200 people joined a class action lawsuit against Chaz Dean and Guthy-Renker. The manufacturers of WEN are accused of ignoring thousands of complaints and continuing to sell the product.
While the investigation continues, the FDA recommends that anyone who experiences a reaction should stop using WEN and contact a dermatologist or other healthcare provider.
