October 8, 2024 — The FDA announced a Class 1 recall for eggs that were supplied by Milo’s Poultry Farms due to a “serious” health risk, including death.
The original recall was expanded on September 5 to include approximately 345,000 dozen cartons of chicken eggs and duck eggs.
The eggs were linked to an outbreak of Salmonella that infected at least 65 people in 9 states, including 25 people who were hospitalized, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation.
On September 30, the FDA upgraded the original recall to a Class 1 recall, which is the highest-level recall, reserved for products that can cause “serious” adverse health consequences, including death.
Most of the sick people are in Wisconsin, which is where Milo’s Poultry Farms is located. However, illnesses have also been reported as far away as California because many victims ate the eggs at restaurants.
The recall involves eggs were sold to restaurants, grocery stores, and food-service distributors in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan.
The recall involves Grade A Brown Chicken Eggs in all sizes and packaging configurations, including eggs that were labeled as Organic, Free-Range, Cage-Free, and non-GMO.
They were sold under the following brand-names:
- Milo’s Poultry Farms
- Tony’s Fresh Market
- M&E Family Farms
- Happy Quackers Farm (duck eggs in 12-count cartons)
No deaths were reported, but this outbreak has an unusually high rate of hospitalization because this strain of Salmonella is resistant to some antibiotics, which makes treatment more challenging.
Due to the serious health risks from this strain of Salmonella, health officials are urging people to seek medical attention immediately if you ate these recalled eggs and developed symptoms like stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, or dehydration.
