Equate Eye Ointments Recalled Due to Infection Risk
In February 2024, certain tubes of Equate Eye Ointment from Walmart were recalled due to a risk of eye infections that could cause vision loss or death. Federal inspectors found unsterile conditions at the facility in India where the eye ointments were produced.
What Happened?
The eye ointment recall was announced by Brassica Pharma Pvt., a drug-maker in Thane, which is a city just outside Mumbai, India.
Eye Drops Linked to Deadly Infection Outbreak in 2023
No infections were reported, but the recall comes after a deadly outbreak of eye infections was linked to eye drops made by another Indian drug-maker. The outbreak in 2023 killed at least 4 people and infected more than 80 others with a dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria called Pseudomonas.
How To Identify Recalled Eye Ointment
Walmart stores nationwide have recalled two types of Equate Eye Ointments with expiration dates between April 2024 and July 2025:
- Equate Lubricant Eye Ointment (Mineral Oil 42.5%, White Petrolatum 57.3%, Lanolin Alcohols): 3.5 gram tube, packaged in cardboard box with UPC Code 681131395298; NDC 79903-026-35
- Equate Stye Lubricant Eye Ointment (Mineral Oil 31.9%, White Petrolatum 57.7%, Microcrystalline Wax, Stearic Acid, Wheat Germ Oil): 3.5 gram tube, packaged in cardboard box with UPC Code 681131395304
The recall also involves CVS Health Lubricant Eye Ointment in a 3.5-gram tube in box with UPC code: 050428634141, and Lubricant PM Ointment in a 3.5 gram tube, sold in box with UPC code: 371406124356.
Contaminated Eye Ointments Could Cause Infections
The recall warns about a “potential risk of eye infections or related harm” for patients who use the recalled eye ointments. The problem is that eye ointments are intended to be sterile, due to the heightened risk of harm because they are applied directly to the eyes, which bypasses some of the body’s natural defenses against infections.
What is the Risk?
- Eye infections
- Vision loss
- Damaged vision (blurriness, sensitivity to light, etc.)
- Blindness
- Loss of the eye
- Invasive infection that spreads to the body
- Bloodstream infection (sepsis)
- Death
