Dole® and Wild Harvest® Romaine Lettuce Recalled for E. coli
On November 21, 2020, Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. recalled certain bags of Dole® and Wild Harvest® organic romaine lettuce hearts due to a risk of E. coli.
What Products Were Recalled?
The recall involves the following organic romaine products:
- Dole™ Organic Romaine Hearts 3pk (UPC 0-71430-90061-1), combined English/French packaging, with Harvested-On dates of 10-23-20 and 10-26-20
- Wild Harvest Organic Romaine Hearts 12-ounce bag. (UPC 7-11535-50201-2), with Harvested-On dates of 10-23-20 and 10-26-20.
Where Was It Sold?
The recalled romaine lettuce products were distributed to grocery stores in Arizona, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Virginia.
What is the Problem?
The recall was issued after a bag of Dole™ Organic Romaine Hearts 3-pack tested positive for a disease-causing strain of E.coli.
The strain was pathogenic non-O157 E.coli STEC. The bag was purchased from a store in Michigan as part of routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Were Any Illnesses Reported?
No illnesses were reported. Furthermore, Dole also said the recalled romaine lettuce products do not appear to be linked to any of the ongoing E. coli outbreaks under investigation in the U.S.
“There is no indication at this time that this positive result is related to any illnesses nor consumer complaints and it is not associated with the strains connected to the ongoing outbreaks currently under regulatory investigation.”
What is Non-O157 E. coli?
Non-O157 strains of E. coli are less likely to be diagnosed because they are less likely to cause a severe illness than E. coli O157, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Even so, there is still a potential risk of severe complications like Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is a type of kidney failure that can be deadly. For most healthy adults, E. coli infections cause a few days of vomiting, abdominal cramps, and bloody diarrhea.
