Costco Recalls Eggs for Salmonella Risk
In November 2024, Costco and their egg supplier Handsome Brook Farms announced a recall for about 10,800 cartons of organic eggs due to a risk of Salmonella.
Where Were The Eggs Sold?
The recall involves 24-count cartons of Kirkland Signature® Organic Pasture-Raised Eggs that were distributed to 25 Costco stores beginning on November 22, 2024, in the following 5 states:
- Alabama
- Georgia
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
How To Identify Recalled Eggs
If you recently bought eggs from Costco, you can look on the side of the plastic carton for the information “327 USE BY JAN 05.”
The eggs were sold in 24-count clear plastic cartons with the “Kirkland Signature” label on the top. The other identifying information is:
- Julian code 327
- Use By Date: January 5, 2025 (printed on the side of the plastic egg carton)
- UPC 9661910680
What Happened?
No illnesses were reported. Instead, Handsome Brook Farms said it initiated the recall “after the company determined that eggs not intended for retail distribution were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging.” The company said it will try to prevent this type of mistake in the future with more “supply chain controls and retraining.”
What is the Risk?
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Some infections can be life-threatening or deadly. Anyone can get sick, but it is most dangerous for young children, frail or elderly adults, and others with weakened immune systems.
Signs & Symptoms of Salmonella
The most common symptoms include diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, and stomach cramps. These symptoms usually start within 6 hours to 6 days after swallowing the Salmonella bacteria.
Most people recover without medical treatment in 4 to 7 days, but some develop severe complications that require hospitalization. The severity of the illness varies widely — some people have no symptoms, while other people experience symptoms for weeks.
What is the Risk?
Hospitalization may be necessary if the Salmonella infection is severe. The treatment will involve antibiotics, but certain strains of Salmonella are becoming antibiotic-resistant, which increases the risk of death.
According to the CDC, “Salmonella strains sometimes cause infection in urine, blood, bones, joints, or the nervous system (spinal fluid and brain), and can cause severe disease.”
