What Happened?

In October 2024, a man from Colorado was the first person to file a lawsuit against McDonald’s for a deadly E. Coli outbreak that has been linked to Quarter Pounders with fresh onion toppings.

His attorney said, “E. Coli only comes from two sources, human or animal feces.” His lawsuit is asking McDonald’s to pay at least $50,000 for his illness, pain and suffering, and more.

How Many People Got Sick in Colorado?

As of November 13, 2024, at least 30 people in Colorado got sick in the McDonald’s E. Coli outbreak, including 1 person who died. They all got sick in September or October 2024, and most of them ate Quarter Pounders.

Nationwide, health officials have confirmed 104 illnesses in 14 states. All of the victims were infected with E. coli O157:H7, which is a Shiga-toxin producing strain of E. coli that can cause severe, life-threatening infections.

According to the CDC: “The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses.

Colorado McDonald’s E. Coli Lawsuits

The first lawsuit against McDonald’s was filed by Eric S., a man from Greeley, Colorado, who got E. coli after eating at McDonald’s on October 4, 2024. Two days later, his symptoms were so severe that he went to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with an E. coli infection.

His lawsuit was filed in Illinois, where the Chicago-based McDonald’s is headquartered.

Another Lawsuit Filed by 15-Year Old Girl in Colorado, Hospitalized With Kidney Failure from E. coli

Another lawsuit was filed against McDonald’s by a 15-year-old girl from Grand Junction, Colorado, who was hospitalized with kidney failure due to severe food poisoning with E. coli.

She was diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is a life-threatening type of kidney failure that can be caused by infections with E. Coli O157:H7. This is a particularly dangerous strain of E. coli because it produces Shiga-toxin.

The infection caused bloody diarrhea, intense abdominal and kidney pain, and vomiting blood. Then she went into acute kidney failure, which required weeks of dialysis and multiple blood transfusions.

Colorado Death Reported in McDonald’s E. Coli Outbreak

Colorado is the hardest-hit state in the McDonald’s E. Coli outbreak, and also the only state where a death was reported.

Tragically, an 88-year-old man in Mesa County, Colorado, died of E. coli after eating at McDonald’s. “All he wanted to do was enjoy a hamburger with his wife,” his family said.

The family of J.C. Smith, a man from Grand Junction, Colorado, said he loved going to McDonald’s with his wife, and he would often order a Quarter Pounder, according to local news KCNC-TV. They said he “put his trust in these restaurants,” and now the family has been left “heartbroken.”
