Coconut Salmonella Outbreak
The outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium has been discovered in two retail products that were tested. The following products were recalled on March 16, 2018:
- Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Market — Natural Grocers® Dried Coconut
- International Harvest — Go Smiles® Dried Coconut
Natural Grocers Coconut Recall
International Harvest Inc. recalled 14,620 pounds of bulk and 24,270 bags of “Organic Go Smile! Raw Coconut” due to a risk of Salmonella food poisoning.
The product was distributed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Georgia, Vermont, Illinois, Florida, Maine, Washington, New Hampshire, and Utah.
The bags of Organic Go Smile! Dried Coconut Raw were sold in a 9-oz plastic bag, UPC: 7 39446 40220 7, with the following “Sell by Dates” on the back of the bag: 010118, 020118, 030118, 040118, 050118,060118, 070118, 080118, 090118, 100118, 110118, 120118, 010119, 020119, 030119.
The bulk Go Smiles! Dried Coconut Raw was also sold in a 25-bulk case labeled with the following batch/Lot #’s: OCSM-0010, OCSM-0011, Lot# OCSM-0014.
Natural Grocers — Organic Coconut Recall
Natural Grocers and Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets, Inc., of Lakewood, Colorado, is recalling Natural Grocers® 10-ounce Coconut Smiles Organic Raw Coconut due to Salmonella contamination.
Six illnesses have been reported by individuals who ate Coconut Smiles Organic purchased from Natural Grocers. Consumers who bought this product should return it to the store for credit or refund.
The products have UPC #8034810 and the recall involves all pack dates before 18-075 (Mar. 16, 2018).
The raw coconut product was distributed to 145 “Natural Grocers” grocery stores in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Salmonella Food Poisoning
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning infections. The symptoms usually include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, Salmonella can cause severe arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
