November 4, 2024 — Savencia Cheese recalled soft cheeses like brie and camembert due to a risk of Listeria contamination.
No illnesses were reported in the recall, but Listeria monocytogenes was discovered on processing equipment at a facility in Lena, Illinois that manufacturers soft ripened cheeses.
Savencia Cheese is urging customers to check product information on the recall notice.
The recalled cheeses were sold at grocery stores like Aldi, Market Basket, and other stores, but the manufacturer said the products “had limited regional distribution” and the “few retailers that received the product have been informed of this possible contamination.”
The cheeses were sold under brand-names like Aldi Emporium Selection Brie, Supreme Oval, La Bonne Vie Brie, La Bonne Vie Camembert, Industrial Brie, and Market Basket Brie.
People who eat foods that are contaminated with Listeria can develop severe infections. The risk is highest for pregnant women and their newborn babies, young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy people who are infected with Listeria may develop “short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,” according to the FDA.
