August 30, 2024 — A lawsuit has been filed by the family of an 88-year-old man who died of a Listeria infection after eating Boar’s Head Liverwurst.
The wrongful death lawsuit was filed on behalf of Gunter M., a Holocaust survivor and hair stylist who worked in Newport News, Virginia, up until his fatal food poisoning illness.
According to his family, he frequently ate liverwurst sandwiches. He bought Boar’s Head Liverwurst on June 30, 2024, from his local Harris Teeter store, and ate it over the next week in sandwiches.
On July 8, he was rushed to the hospital in “critically ill” condition because he was having trouble breathing, diarrhea, and weakness.
Blood tests confirmed that he was infected with Listeria monocytogenes, which was later found to be an exact match for the strain of Listeria found in Boar’s Head Liverwurst products.
Tragically, he developed Listeria meningitis and suffered fatal brain damage. He passed away on July 18, 2024, according to the lawsuit.
Between June and August 2024, at least 9 people died and 57 others were hospitalized with Listeria infections after eating Boar’s Head Liverwurst and other Deli Meat products, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation.
